safari lodges Tanzania

Tanzania

vast mesmerising spaces

Tanzania has been captivating visitors with its dreamy mix of noble jump-dancing Maasai warriors, towering snow-capped mountain peaks, the thundering all year Great Migration, a flamboyance of soda lake flamingoes and believe it or not, tree-climbing lions

.

Tanzania’s weather can be summarised as peak dry season Jan/Feb plus June to October.

Tanzania’s wet season from March to May and again November to December.

.

In peak season the Migration offer dramatic and very popular river crossings but remember – Africa’s largest herds keep moving along their circle of life so are present all year long.

.

Because of this ongoing migration, one can beat peak season rates (and game vehicle traffic…) by travelling at off peak periods. For example – travel during the February for the annual calving season and witness large numbers of predators magnificently stalking the herds…

And yes, the big game found on the Ngorongoro Crater floor also remain down there all year long so come and visit Tanzania whenever you can – the game will be there.

.

The Indian Ocean on the eastern border of Tanzania offer some of the dreamiest, soft sandy beach escapes available and make for the perfect chill out after roughing in the wild.

We suggest adding on a 3-5night stay on the beautiful barefoot islands of Zanzibar or Pemba. Indian Ocean Island package rates are available on request.

.

International flights usually arrive into either Dar Es Salaam or Kilimanjaro from where one can connect a flight or road transfer to Arusha Airport – hub for inter-lodge flights into Tanzania.

The Serengeti

Ahhhh, the Serengeti…

Approximately 30 000 km (12 000 sq mi) of pristine wilderness filled with distant horizon lines across its game-rich plains.

.

With the largest herds on the planet and Africa’s highest concentration of predators, the Serengeti is probably THE most celebrated game reserve in the world.

It’s difficult to predict the exact timing and route of the Great Migration path but with the wildebeest’s constant search for food and water, the ‘general’ migration route rotates through the eastern Serengeti (nov-dec) and into the wet south where almost 400 000 wildebeest calves are born around late January to mid-March.

And of course, calving season attracts stalking predators in large numbers…

.

From April onwards the Migration moves through the western Serengeti, passing the Grumeti around May to June and onward to

the drier plains of the north between July and August

.

This is the time when jostling herds famously splash their way across the Mara River into Kenya’s Masai Mara…  With the Migration’s return to Tanzania during September to October, the Mara river daringly gets crossed a second time.

The protected area within the region includes approximately 30,000 km (12,000 sq mi) so it is said that even if you removed the Great Migration from the picture, the Serengeti will still deliver magnificent game viewing opportunities.
